he above was the heading in the July 2, 1990 CHRISTIAN NEWS, a Lutheran paper that is well-worth reading by anyone who wants to be informed about happenings in the world that should concern Christians. We are informed that three of "the leading Roman Catholic Bible scholars in the world," who served as the editors, and some fifty Roman Catholic scholars have written a large one-volume commentary on the Bible. It is called The Roman Catholic Jerome Biblical Commentary. It sells for $50 a copy.
This commentary claims that the Bible contains errors, fiction, myth and legend. Its authors assert that the world is 4.5 billion years old and that man and the universe gradually evolved. It says that Noah's flood, the account of Jonah in the large fish, the story of Ruth, the story of the three men in the fiery furnace, the Biblical account of the destruction of Jericho and the fall of its walls, the Genesis account of creation, and a lot more is sheer fiction!
According to the commentary, Jesus is not the pre-existent omniscient Son of the Living God, whose fleshly body was actually raised from the grave. In other words, Jesus was only a human being, not diety or God in any sense.
More proofs of unbelief and rejection of the Bible as God's inspired word: Moses did not write the first five books of the Bible. Isaiah did not write chapters 40-66 of the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah did not predict the coming of Jesus Christ, that He would be born of a virgin, and suffer and die for the sins of all men. The Six Century B .C. prophet Daniel did not write the Book of Daniel. The books of Ruth, Jonah and Esther are fiction. The book of Matthew contains fiction. Three thousand were not converted on Pentecost. The Bible is not the inspired, inerrant word of God. Jesus did not co-exist with the Father from all eternity.
"Anyone who wants to know what is going on within the Roman Catholic Church should read The New Jerome Biblical Commentary," so states Herman Otten, Editor of Christian News. He also tells us: "This commentary does not pre sent the views of a few liberal editors. Its 70 Roman Catholic contributors reflect what is being taught within the Roman Catholic Church today, in Rome's colleges and seminaries. Roman Catholic officials say "it is free of doctrinal or moral error." The publication of this commentary has the Pope's approval and blessing. "The commentary sup ports the Pope's view, which is held by liberal scholars in major Protestant denominations, that Muslims, Jews and non-Christians worship the true God," so declares Mr. Otten.
"Conservative Roman Catholics have been complaining about the weak stand some of their bishops have been taking on abortion and homosexuality. Some Roman Catholic laymen think that their priests and bishops are just plain 'stupid' for believing such 'hoaxes' as the extermination of six million Jews by the Germans. Some Roman Catholics have been upset that the Pope has refused to declare that the visions of Mary at Medjugorje are not authentic. The fact that some Roman Catholics have defended the Communists while urging sanctions on South Africa has disturbed other Roman Catholics. Pious Roman Catholics are concerned that little has been done to remove from the priest hood at least some of the thousands of practicing homosexual priests," so writes Mr. Otten.
As bad and sinful as all the above is, it should be expected to follow in the wake of the absolute unbelief of the most corrupt religious church institution the world has even known. The saddest thing of all is that so many thousands of good people have been deceived into believing that such a monstrous, corrupt, inconsistent, wicked institution is from God! People have forgotten h story and the terrible time known as "The Dark Ages" when the Roman Catholic Church, usually in collusion with some of the most wicked of the kings and civil rulers, ruled almost the whole world. Have you ever read of the martyrs? Have you forgotten your history? It has been truly said that "History repeats itself." The Old Testament scriptures testify to this fact in an amazing way. It happened over and over with Israel and Judah. And the history of the "secular" world shows the same thing. And it is my opinion that we are beginning to see (that is, if we have eyes to see and hearts open and willing to under stand) the clear beginning of another "dark ages" coming over the world.
As world conditions worsen and institutional religion of all kinds becomes more worldly and corrupt, offering nothing of real spiritual substance, let us fervently pray that God will shield and care for (even if in the midst of persecution or martyrdom) His "faithful few." "Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life ... He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death" (Rev. 2:10-11 ). CAH
