Their Faith is in Their Logic
One of Murphy's Laws on Technology is: "Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence." That reminds me of a number of my preaching brethren, a small hard-core group who exalt human reason and logic to the throne of worship! In fact, their faith rests in logic and their ability to use it. They apparently have little faith in anything that has not been put through their grist mill of logic. Their primary faith lies in that area. Even God's plain statements must be "rendered" as truth in their logic mill.
They hold that the absolute, clear-cut truth on any and every subject, pertaining to God's word, can be determined by their use of logic; you know, all those syllogisms, with major and minor premises, that produces an infallible, inerrant conclusion!
Their logic and conclusions derived therefrom remind me of the "Rule of Accuracy: When working toward a solution of a problem, it always helps if you know the answer." Ain't that a fact of life! Hence, as is usually done, the "answer" is determined first and then the bewildering syllogisms are constructed to prove or demonstrate the absolute truth of their foregone conclusion! These brethren, several of them Ph.D.'s, have this "science" refined down to a gnatís hair. They can prove every position they hold and believe -- the "answer" they already have and want! If you doubt it, they will quickly build a syllogism that will prove it! It just can't be wrong! These good brethren may often be wrong, but they are never in doubt! They have proved it by logic, constructed in proper syllogistic form. Their idol never fails them!
Some of these brethren are such devotees to the "god"(or is it "goddess"?) of logic, syllogistically stated, and the product of human wisdom, that they even argue for the necessity of logic in understanding or arriving at truth on any Bible matter. Of course, only "logicians," a label of which they are especially proud, can therefore be the determiners of truth. Their esoteric knowledge places them far above us "ignorant and unlearned" men and women. Thus, like the Catholics must depend upon the church and its clergy for what they believe and practice, so we are reduced to dependency upon our few erudite "logicians" to grind out and deliver to us the truth on all subjects! And they claim to be able to do this right down to the dotting of an "i" and the crossing of the "t." This is the old Gnosticism in a new garb!
The apostles spoke God's word by the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Those Spirit-guided men, and a few others acting under the same power, gave us what we now call the New Testament Scriptures. Even though Scripture claims for itself that "All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine; for reproof, for conviction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:15-16), it is not adequate in its form as given! Only foolish people could believe that. It remained for certain wise men among us to bring us absolute, knowable truth by their own human wisdom, expressed in logical terms and syllogistic schematics! Take their word for their pronouncements of truth; they have all come through their logic/syllogism route; and this is infallibility equal to or greater than that of the apostles!
They are very sure and confident men. But let us remember that "Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence!" Also, keep in mind that they have the "Rule of Accuracy" going for them: When they work toward the solution, they already have the answer! No one can beat that system! -- CAH
